Devils Tower, WY: We came, we saw, we conquered, and we got stuck. (Sept.8th- Sept.15th)
Previous attempts to climb Devils Tower were shut down due to cold weather and a rainy forecast. Instead of climbing, Will and Bob took shelter at the local library where they watched mind-numbing internet videos and eventually filled out their stockpile of postcards, most of them. Back at the free campsite, located in the Sandcreek Access Area, Will and Bob tested out their new solar panel system and to their surprise, it worked. They could now charge their phones and turn on Will's white-noise machine in order to drown out Bob's snoring.
As day's passed the weather got better, allowing them to make the trip back to Devils Tower. Upon arrival to the tower, they got their packs and hiked to the base of the climb. Were Will and Bob in over their heads? Maybe. But regardless of their merits they made it to the top. It was 7 hours of hauling up an unnecessary food pack and getting trapped behind a slow and irritating couple, but they made it. Now it's time to rappel down. Easy, right? Think again.
The trip down would have been a lot worse if it weren't for the fellow German climbers behind them. Even with Will and Bob's superior intelligence they still managed to forget one drastic detail; getting the rope jammed in the cracks of the tower above them. The Germans saved their butts twice and they did it in style. With the German's superhuman-like abilities, they managed to get Will and Bob's rope unjammed, allowing them the continue their rappel down to the base. In all of their embarrassment, they still managed to smoke a cigar in celebration and drive home with their head's held high... but not too high.
